HRS MO St. Louis
House Rabbit Society is a 501 (c3) all-volunteer, non-profit organization with a dual purpose of rescue and education. Donations are tax - deductible. Utilizing foster homes as rescue "shelters," volunteers provide appropriate care and socialization opportunities to rabbits so that they may be adopted into loving, permanent, indoor homes. Our educators assist the public, humane societies, and local shelters through publications on rabbit care, phone and e-mail consultations, and classes upon request.

We do not euthanize an animal unless they are suffering from an incurable disease or wound. The House Rabbit Society of Missouri, St. Louis, directs their rescue efforts towards saving the lives of bunnies in threatening situations, those scheduled for euthanasia at local shelters, or rescue referrals from area shelters and veterinarians. Our commitment to saving the lives of bunnies is paramount.

If you know of a bun in a non-threatening environment in need of a new home, please call 314-995-1457 or e-mail mo_hrs@hotmail.com
for suggestions. Because our foster spots are reserved for rabbits on "death row" at area shelters and animal control facilities, we do not accept rabbits from individuals. However, those rabbits needing new homes can be listed on our site if they are spayed/neutered and healthy.

Beautiful "MIsty Blue" when she arrived                    One side of mouth/face pulling up.                        Mouth is visible from nerve damage
                                                                                                                                                                                          pulling up face.

She arrived with a golf ball sized abscess on her abdomen from being kept in a bad wire floored cage, but her sweet demeanor held up throughout treatment.  Then we noticed that one side of her face was pulling up starting at the mouth indicative of facial nerve damage caused by severely infected middle ears.

Normal Bullae           Misty Blue's Infected Bullae

Antibiotics cannot reach the middle ear as it's surrounded by bone (which can also become diseased from the infection) and there are no blood vessels to carry medication into that area which is supposed to be open.  Only a serious surgery, called a bullae osteotomy, opening the skull performed by a highly skilled surgeon knowledgeable in this procedure on rabbits, can help.

We are fortunate in one respect that such a surgeon from New York City will be visiting the University of Illinois at the Champaign-Urbana campus in mid February and will do the surgery if we can raise the funds. Because both ears are infected Misty Blue will require a double bullae osteotomy.  The university estimated the surgery with attendant costs  (3 day hospital stay, CT scan, medicine, etc.) will run around $3000.

We're hoping we can help Misty Blue.  We don't want to give up on her, but we're going to need help from others to pull this off.  Last year's medical bills in total for the fosters were extremely high although, on the good side, we rescued over 210 bunnies and found adoptive homes for 176.  We also had to replace the washing machine used at the main foster home which finally gave up the ghost after doing 30 heavy loads a week. Those expenditures do not leave us with a surplus that can include Misty's surgery.

The urgent thing is that there's very little time to accomplish this and Misty's infection continues to get worse.

If you would like to donate towards helping with Misty Blue's surgery, please designate "surgery" on your donation.
You may donate by any of the following methods:

- Use our PayPal button on the website
- Mail to us at P.O. Box 6362, Chesterfield, MO 63006
- Drop off a donation at the main foster home (Joy's place.)
Thank you!   MO HRS

"Misty Blue" needs surgery ASAP.           We need donations in order to help her.
Clicking on the "Donate" button lets you donate using your Checking Account, Paypal Account or Credit Card.
The middle ear is actually inside the skull.

You can see normal bullae (the middle ears) on the left x-ray with just shadowy spaces inside the bullae.

Misty Blue's x-ray is on the right which shows a denser white indicating the bullae is filled with infection.
The Rabbit Rescue Calendar is often sent to friends in far away places.  The first year we printed the calendar we found out that our calendar had actually been sent to all 7 continents in the world! Yes, even the Antarctic where one of the scientists sent us a photo of herself proudly holding up the calendar next to the real South Pole.

This year a lovely calendar tale came back to us when a friend of one of our members sent the calendar to her friend in the Netherlands after that friend had just lost her bunny.

Upon arrival the lady was surprised at the thought that there might be bunnies in a shelter needing a home. She'd simply never thought about it until seeing the calendar.  She promptly made a visit to her local shelter and now has three new bunnies.

How lovely that our calendar helped three bunnies so far away find their forever home. Photos of Hoshi, Ayla, and Julian are below.  (photos with permission of their new bunny parents)
